Lake Shirley

Lake Shirley, a classic Massachusetts kettlehole spanning about 330 acres across Lunenburg and Shirley (with a small portion of shoreline in Shirley), is a fertile, recreational favorite with an average depth of 14 feet and deeper pockets reaching up to 32 feet. Water clarity is moderate (often slightly stained or impacted by summer algae and aquatic plants due to watershed nutrients), creating warm, productive conditions that fuel aggressive bass action. The lake features plenty of diverse habitat: numerous coves and islands for exploration, weed beds and emergent vegetation, docks along developed shorelines, rocky points, and gradual-to-steep drop-offs—ideal for targeting largemouth bass, which dominate here in healthy, abundant numbers. Smallmouth bass are present and catchable, especially around harder structure and deeper zones, but largies rule the shallows, weeds, and cover for flipping, Texas rigs, or topwater fun. Fed mainly by groundwater with minor inflows and a controlled dam outlet, the pond's setup supports reliable bites year-round, though vegetation can thicken in summer. Tournament access comes via the boat launch at Shady Point Beach & Campground on Reservoir Road, making it convenient for our bass club events.
