Manchaug Pond

Manchaug Pond, straddling Sutton and Douglas in Worcester County, is a 344–380 acre improved great pond (raised by damming for historic mill power) that's a solid warmwater fishery in the Blackstone watershed. With an average depth of 13 feet and a max of 37 feet (deeper pockets from recent sonar mapping), it offers somewhat stained water (visibility around 6 feet, influenced by tannins and occasional algae) and a productive mix of habitat: shallow shorelines dropping gradually, submerged rock walls and stone piles, small islands/sandbars, coves with sparse weed patches (more along western shores), and rocky points/drop-offs—perfect for flipping, jigging, or cranking around structure. Largemouth bass dominate the shallower, vegetated, and island/rock areas for consistent action, while smallmouth bass hit the harder bottoms and deeper zones—both species are present in good numbers, though intense fishing pressure means most catches are in the 1–3 lb range (with occasional bigger ones possible, especially early season). The pond's setup delivers reliable bites for our bass club, particularly in spring before heavy recreational traffic (powerboats, waterskiing) ramps up. Access is excellent via the public concrete boat ramp on the southeast side off Torrey Road (paved parking, but fills fast on weekends—pay at the ramp: $6/day MA residents/$12 out-of-state, or grab a $40 season pass at Sutton Town Hall; register group events with OFBA if needed, and always Clean/Drain/Dry for invasives—watch for shallow hazards like boulders and submerged features).
